The Gift of Nature
Wednesday, 09 July 2008

As a child I felt alive when I was in nature. With four children in our family, we spent a lot of time in a station wagon towing a pop up tent. We camped every three day weekend and usually spent two to three weeks on a trip during summer vacation. Whether it was sitting around a bon fire, night hiking to a hidden cave without flashlights turned on or pretending we were the people in mountain dew commercials rolling down a hill in an inner-tube into a lake, I came alive in nature. I also came alive at the zoo, when traveling through the city of Chicago on the CTA bus, when I read books, watched television or even when I formed my tree climbing club, I was alive when in nature. I was alive when exploring. And somehow I learned the power of imagination interspersed with nature, I was simply trying to survive life.

The problems with (us) humans is we don’t know how to enjoy our lives because we spend so much time in survival mode. It doesn’t matter whether you come from a family with no parents or those that are millionaires, we all have to go through the developmental process. We all have to learn how to survive, thrive and live life.

Growing up, I spent my entire childhood searching. I believe my sixth sense to read feelings developed because of what I experienced, a blessing and a curse…. I realize the circumstances we go through creates who we are and everyone has their own story to tell, everyone has their own hardships. Every family hides their secrets from the outside world and often people live their life as the great big cover up. Unfortunately, our society lives this way…in the great big cover-up. No one wants to hear about what is really happening because we don’t know what to do about it, so we simply cover it up. I was the child that waved hands in the air and said…NO…let’s not cover this up. We become a product of our environment. Yet, my own mind kept me a prisoner for years until I realized that I could take control of my own life. Fortunately I realized that I was a prisoner of my own past and now am responsible for my life. I take ownership and responsibility, I have taken a vow to spread Love, Patience and Unity.

We never know what our brothers and sisters on the planet are going through because we are great at covering up our lives from outsiders. We are great at living in our own minds, in our own selves. Yet, everyone has their own story to tell. All we can do is walk with compassion and try and become who we are born to be. We are born to be compassion and love. If we lived our lives surrounded by people who just wanted to share love with people and respect our planet, that which gives us life, could you imagine our world? Our work is not based on a dollar amount, our work is to be love and give love. If we do this in our day to day life then we will have abundance.

OK, so you think I sound like a hippee? I am not, I was born after that generation. I am simply a person who cares about soul, nature & environment. My life began in humble means, it expanded when I spent $200 nearly 20 years ago learning to Scuba Dive. I am a person who constantly lives in the NOW, yet I do not forget what influenced my life and what continues to do so. Learning to scuba dive, becoming a professional and sharing the ocean with others has become a part of my skin. To me, the Ocean is Mother Ocean, connected to our souls.
