J's First Breath
Thursday, 30 October 2008

Time for my first breath underwater! Well it was a crazy experience for me. Mostly because I stopped thinking about how much I was afraid of drowning. This fear has been ingrained in me because I've come very close to it as a kid. I also hadn't jumped off a diving board since I was about 8 years old because a kid who worked at the swim school I went to pushed me off and traumatized me! Haha. Kinda funny now. This reminds me of Annie's saying, focus on nothing and everything will appear.

Having the opportunity to take scuba diving classes, I realized that these childhood fears were going to do me no good and fortunately, learning how to use the dive equipment gave me a lot of confidence. It's amazing how much security an air tank can give you. Once I started breathing we went over to the deep and and got used to swimming, but then something horrible happened! I could not control my body! I started to roll backward, float off, and frustrate Annie! This kept happening and made the learning experience a bit frustrating and scary for me too. But then we just added a bunch of weights and got me neutrally balanced and everything was fine. Looking back, I definitely don't miss the pool and those awkward moments.
