Dive Into Your Imagination

Swimming Pool Tips
Sunday, 11 May 2008

1. Get your kids to the pool as soon as you can. When first going into a pool, start at the steps. Sit on the top step and move down as your child becomes comfortable.

2. Bring fun water toys into the bath and pool. Different sized cups, washable crayons, sponges, colorful foam letters are great for bath time. Balls, noodles and realistic floating toys are great for the pool. Make water fun!

3. Make sure your expectations for your child are realistic and based on your child’s comfort level, age and ability. Do not overestimate or force your child into doing something they are not ready to do. Try and find a game to play with them to get them comfortable with the water. If they are not having a good time, get out of the water without making a big deal about it. Try again another day. It can take months, but don’t give up!

4. Take your child swimming often and join a swim class if you can.

5. Dive into the water with your child. Show them how much fun it can be by enjoying it yourself! While holding your child jump up and down in the shallow end, laugh, splash, make bubbles with your mouth. Sing silly water songs and encourage them to relax and play. Allow them to experience the freedom of the water.

I still remember my mom playing in the water with me as she twirled us around and around the water. Being in the water might be unnatural for us as adults if we did not grow up with water, yet babies thrive in it! Remember to have fun!
