Bathing Tips!

1. First you need to make sure the water temperature is not too hot or too cold. Run the water on the inner part of your forearm. This is a sensitive area on adults and a good guide for children’s skin. The water needs to be warm. If it is not the right temperature you will create a reluctant bather or swimmer.

2. When you get your children in the tub, allow them to have fun and explore the water. Toys help! Be ready to get wet, it’s just a part of bath time! Bath time should be more about fun and less about hygiene. Wait until the end of bath time to actually clean your child. This is a teaching opportunity as well. Give your child some responsibility to wash and learn the name of their body parts. Save washing hair until right before you get your child out of the water. Many children hate having water poured on their head. Always warn your child first. Make up a chant like 1-2-3 Water! and say it right before you pour the water. Use a cup and encourage your child to tip their head back to avoid getting water and soap in their eyes.

3. Slowly introduce the idea of submersion to your child. Begin by sprinkling water on his or her face and add on from there. If at any point your child is uncomfortable…STOP…Do not force the issue of submersion. Let your child gain confidence and go at their rate, not yours. Encourage your child to pour water on their own head which helps them feel more in control. You can help them pour the water.

4. Test every product you purchase for your child on yourself! Don’t believe the bottles. Put on the sunscreen, lotion, and try out the soap and shampoo. Rinse and open your eyes. See what it feels like. Always have a towel or cloth nearby to wipe their eyes. One bad experience can have long lasting effects. If you use bubbles, they can be fun but check too make sure that they don’t sting your child’s eyes.

5. If your child is afraid to sit in the bathtub, put your suit on and get in with your child! Let them sit on your lap and slowly dip them into the water until they are sitting on the tub floor. After a few weeks, they should be happy to bathe alone. At the very least, it’s a fun way to spend time with your child.
