Swimming Pool Photography!
Saturday, 21 June 2008

Really Cool Dad, Jon, sent Dive Into Your Imagination images of his children in the swimming pool. What caught our attention was that the kids had underwater cameras and were taking photographs in the pool. They are only four and a half years old and already taking kids photographs! The Dive Into Your Imagination crew traveled to meet Jorga and Jackson, 4 year old twins who love the water and are budding children photographers! Read more and see them in action...

It is hard to stay on top of technology! Camera manufacturers keep coming out with cameras that are smaller with more memory. The days of the delay of digital are becoming yesterdays. And they advertise that the systems are so easy that even children can use them! Do they advertise this? Probably not, but they should. There are many different types of cameras on the market, yet basically they fall into two categories...SLR and Point and Shoot. SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex and allows you to see in the viewfinder exactly what you are shooting. SLR cameras tend to be alot more pricey and hard on the pocketbook. The point and shoot cameras come in a variety of prices, yet you can buy disposable cameras for $20 or spend a couple thousand dollars on a camera, housing and strobe you can take underwater with you. The cameras scuba children Jorga and Jackson (FOUR YEAR OLDS!!!) use are manufactured by Sea & Sea. Their parents do all the prepping of the equipment and showed Jorga and Jackson how to use them. Most of the maintenance is left up to Dad, but the rewards the kids get with the systems are worth the price paid. The kids have only been to the pool with the cameras, yet you can bet after a year of practice in the pool with the cameras how great their first images will be when they go snorkeling.

When most people buy their underwater camera systems, they are about to go on their holiday and take photographs. A key component to taking a great photograph is knowing the capabilities of your camera system. The best way to accomplish this for underwater photography is to keep going back to your local pool. Bring models, bring toys, bring kids and practice! Get to the pool with your system and create a pool shoot. Most of the point and shoot camera systems also shoot video, so you might just want to experiment with that as well! Creating images underwater that you can share can be extraordinarily rewarding. And let's face it, if four year olds can take amazing images, those of us who can read an owner's manual should be able to be just as successful!
