To native Chicagoan Annie Crawley, aka Ocean Annie, entertaining and educating people about the ocean has become her purpose and passion. Annie Crawley founded Dive Into Your Imagination to change the way a new generation views the Ocean. She spends her time in the depths of the ocean around the world as a photographer and filmmaker. Her passion now is to bring her work to children and their parents! With an award winning series of books and DVDS, she will be bringing sunshine to cold Chicago during a three week speaking tour from February 10th through the 24th. Annie, also considers herself an "ocean enviro-educator"and wants children everywhere to experience the beauty and magic of the ocean. Annie discovered the ocean nearly 20 years ago and it changed her life. In her words, "I want children to fall in love with the ocean because we protect what we love." During the month of August, Ocean Annie spent three weeks documenting the SEAPLEX cruise for Project Kaisei, one of the main funders of the expedition. Project Kaisei is finding solutions to clean up the plastic debris in the North Pacific Gyre, more commonly known as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Dive Into Your Imagination series are award winning bilingual (English and Spanish) DVDs, including the titles: What Makes A Fish, A Fish, Who Lives in the Sea and Dive Into Diversity. In addition Ocean Life A to Z a book/DVD was produced with Reader’s Digest Children’s Publishing. This year Dive Into Your Imagination is planning on launching more books and lesson plans to complement the series. Annie comes out on stage with her mask, snorkel and fins and has children sing "The Ocean Song,"a theme song she wrote for the Dive Into Your Imagination series. She asks the children where they think she comes from and they all shout, THE SEA! "That’s right, I am a mermaid," Annie continues, "Who wants to be a mermaid with me?" Her presentations engage everyone with live action video she has captured from around the world, Papua New Guinea to Galapagos, Indonesia to Belize. Annie teaches ocean and environmental facts, in simple and real messages that kids understand, "Every thing we do on land affects the ocean. And we need the ocean to be healthy, it is responsible for more than 70% of the oxygen we need on land!" There are accelerated programs for high school and college students available including journalism and filmmaking presentations. In addition to motivational and public speaking, Crawley conducts video production classes, leads trips and tours around the world, and her work is published and broadcast worldwide. Crawley also released her signature series, Live Your Dreams, WORDS for life. This collection pairs inspirational words and messages for life with her amazing photography. "Every child, regardless of their access to the ocean or aquariums, should appreciate the world we live in so they can explore natural creativity and dive into their imaginations." Annie also joins her young followers in supporting the environment. "This generation is justifiably concerned about the condition of our oceans and world. It’s important to them that we leave the world a better place. The environment wasn’t something we talked about too much when I was a child, growing up in Chicago. I remember when the recycling program first started, it failed miserably until we brought it into the schools. That is what I want to do with the ocean and education, bring the real ocean into the hearts of kids, educate and inspire them." Contact Dive Into Your Imagination for her Chicagoland engagements.
