Project Kaisei was a UNEP Global Climate Hero last year, and is the only science-based ocean recovery project that is working on ways to take plastic out of the ocean, and turn it into other materials or fuel. They are also working on some great prevention programs on land. Their objectives are to understand and quantify the scope and impact of marine debris (plastic) in our ocean, particularly in the North Pacific. With an expedition this summer, the team would be able to better calculate what a cleanup effort might entail. Last year they tested a number of catch methods that can be used to capture the floating plastic, even some of the small pieces, using passive netting (like floating fence-lines), which are low in energy use, and have minimal impact on marine life. Their goal is to then show that the debris that is captured has a value to it, either as fuel, or other secondary products. The use of this material could help to subsidize a future cleanup, but it can also be used to show that prevention on land is possible, so that these materials can be collected and used in new ways, instead of finding their way to the waste dump or the ocean. By voting on Pepsi Refresh Project site today, and every day until May 31, you can help Project Kaisei win $250,000 to help fund its next research mission to the North Pacific Gyre in August of 2010! Keep this note in your email box and click on the link above every day in May to help Project Kaisei win, and spread the word! Set as favorite Bookmark
