Richard, you are an amazing photographer. How did you know you wanted to be a professional photographer?

I took a photography class in High School because at the time I thought it would be five easy credits, since anyone could take a picture. During the class there was a photo contest and since I am very competitive, I decided that I was going to win. When I won the contest, I thought maybe I could be a professional photographer. I really worked hard in the class from that day on, studying Ansel Adams, Jerry Ulesman, Diane Arbus, and Josef Karsh. Then I decided that if I were serious I would go to one of the best schools of photography, Brooks Institute of Photography, and I did. From then until now I have loved what I do.

Tell us about your favorite ocean experience.

I was diving Anacapa Island shooting macro shots of brittle stars. I was low on air, so I needed to go back to the surface. As I turned around to start up, right in front of me was a Giant Black Sea Bass! He was at least 300 pounds! I screamed through my regulator with joy. His eyes met mine and we had this silent conversation that stays with me to this day. He stayed around until I just had to leave. Amazing!

In your own words, how did you decide to create your book “Sea of Light”?

“Sea of Light” started out as a way of sharing my underwater experiences with my friends and family. After taking my photos and talking with my designer friend, John Balint, we both looked at each other and realized that this has to be shared with more than just my family, this has to be shared with the world. It caught me by surprise because I had never thought that I was creating art. But I was. I now want to show everyone the beauty and splendor of the Channel Islands.

What do you want other people to know about the ocean?

The ocean is full of wonder and new discovery. Every dive is different in some way and the experiences I have had have changed me, and enriched my life. It’s a place of unspeakable beauty, and has repaid my interest with a greater appreciation of this planet we live on.

You are living your dreams. Can you share with us your secrets?

I am living my dreams. Hard work and perseverance, I never give up on what I want. It’s the only way I know how. Follow your heart. Find what you love, and imagine yourself doing it, and then begin. Always work hard, and give more than is expected of you.
