Fish think that School is Cool, do you know why? Many fish school for protection, they continually work their ways into the center of the school as they swim round and round and round because they do not want to be on the outside where they are the most vulnerable. You can get dizzy as you watch them. Schools of fish can be made up of fish that just hang out together, or they can be highly organized schools of fish. They barely swim a "fins" length away from one another. They seem to move at the same speed and in unison. Watch the video to check out this school of jacks!
Below is a photograph showing how the jack fish have separated and now converge with one another. They were just scared apart by a giant tuna. They broke apart into two separate groups and swam around their predator. Predators shake up a school's unison and rely on confusion to capture prey. At the flip of a fin, a school of fish will change directions and swim left, right, up and down, round and round.
Schooling fish often will rest under a large boat or flotsam in the water. These fish were using a coral reef pinnacle for protection. In the middle of the ocean there are sea mounts that come close to the surface. This sea mount was a little bit larger than the size of a football field and went from 40 feet under water (13 meters) to 1000 feet deep (330 meters). The schooling jacks found protection by staying together on top of the reef, hiding from animals that could sneak up on them from below!
