SCHOOLING FISH
Friday, 02 October 2009

Fish use sight, smell, sound and feeling with their lateral lines to stay together, they find safety in numbers!

Off the coast of Southern California lies The Channel Islands. Diving and snorkeling around these islands are some of the most magnificent sights on our planet. The kelp forests are home to so many animals, it is like swimming through a mermaid’s lair. When conditions are right, there is often a treat, schooling fish like anchovies, mackerel and herring find their way into the protection of kelp fronds.

These fish want to school because they use one another for protection. They use lateral lines along their bodies to sense direction of one another. The schooling fish dance in the sunlight as they try to protect themselves, knowing that moving in a unit they have a better chance of survival.

BLUE OCEAN TIP: Do not take critters or other living organisms from the ocean. Everything serves a purpose and you don't want to take someone's home or dinner.
