Coral reefs are underwater cities in the sea! Coral reefs have been around for million of years. Their formations base are hard stony corals but they are home to thousands of animals including fish, sponges, octopus, worms, coral, crustaceans and algae too! Shallow water reefs are found close to the equator, 30 degrees north and south because they thrive in warm shallow waters.

Whale Sharks!

Whale Sharks grow up to lengths of 60 feet/18 meters long and they have weighed in at nearly 10,000 pounds (21,000 kilograms)!!! Are these huge animals fish? Are they whales? What are whale sharks?They live in the ocean, have fins to swim, use gills to breathe, so whale sharks must be....

Sea Turtle Swim!

When turtles move around on land, they move clumsily and slowly along, but when a turtle swims underwater, they can move along slowly or really quickly. When a turtle rests underwater, they can stay submerged for up to 7 hours without one breath. But the more active the turtles are, the more they have to breathe because they are reptiles. Check out this Hawksbill turtle.

Where Does Oxygen Come From?

Dolphins need air. Sea lions need air. We need air.

But what is it in the air that we need?

You are right! It is the oxygen. Even fish need oxygen. Think about this…the chemical make-up of water is what? Hmmm….think about it. Yup, H2O. Two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. Fish use their gills to get oxygen from water. Almost every single living organism needs oxygen in order to survive.
