Ghost Pipefish? Can their be such a thing? The ocean is full of whacky and wild critters. Look closesly at the fish to the right. Can you see the eye? What about the gill plate? I will give you a hint, it is the scale looking plate to the left of the eye. And check out this fishes skin, what is that growing all over its body?

Female and male ghost pipefish land on the reef and form mating pairs. You can tell the difference from the two by looking at the shape of their ventral fins. Do you know which fins are a fishes ventral fins? It is the two front fins on the lower side of a fishes body. The female has ventral fins that form a pouch so she can hold her fertilized eggs until they hatch.
Can you find two ornate ghost pipefish in the scene below? Which is the male? Which is the female? They are living in a crinoid on the reef. They blend in using camouflage. Their spiky looking body helps them blend into the coral reef.
