Flamboyant Cuttlefish. What a word to say. Cuttlefish are in the cephalopod family related to squid, octopus and the chambered nautilus. Flamboyant cuttlefish are amazing creatures in the sea. They do not swim like their cousins, they move around like armored tanks crawling along the bottom.
Originally they got their names because of their color displays of red, white and yellow, but now we know the only time they do this display is when they are frightened or trying to guard themselves. Like other cephalopods, they are giant blobs of protein that everything would like to eat. They blend in perfectly to the background whether it is black or white sandy or rocky rubble. They crawl around and use their eight arms in front of them to stir up the bottom. When they spot small fish and shrimp they take aim with their two tentacles and then BAM! They strike before the fish or shrimp knew what was coming. Watching flamboyant cuttlefish is amazing when they are on the hunt! It is believed that these animals have territories they patrol similar to an octopus and its den.

BLUE OCEAN TIP: In developing countries where many of these amazing critters live, there is not garbage programs set up. It was only in the 1970’s that we established the clean water act here in the United States because of the pollution in our rivers and lakes from industry. We need to help other countries establish clean water acts of their own. In some areas, the rubbish area is the side of a mountain and when it rains, all the rubbish goes into the ocean. This was fine when banana leaves was waste, but with the introduction of plastic and other non-perishables, we are creating huge amounts of trash entering our ocean. Can you follow your footprint of garbage? Is it something that you care about or care to ignore?
