Mat Broughton gets to live his dreams every day! "I’m an apprenticing underwater filmmaker living in Santa Barbara,California. I produce videos so that we can inspire others to 'Dive into their imagination and live their dreams.'” MatieB works as an editor and camera assistant. He shoots with the Panasonic HVX 200 and an Underwater Gates Housing with Green Force Lights. As a recent Graduate from Brooks Institute of Photography, MatieB, has a complete understanding of still photography, photoshop, video, editing and Final Cut Pro. He has interned with Annie Crawley for the past year and has just joined the crew.

MatieB has always been in love with the ocean. Ever since he was a little boy his father would take him to the beach and teach me about the animals they would find in the tide pools. "When I was about seven, I asked my father about his scuba gear. He was more than happy to show me and he even let me breath off his tank and regulator! This was my very first experience with scuba and I’ve been hooked ever since!"

MatieB's work has been published and he most recently has had his work showcased in several underwater film festivals. As one of the newest members of the crew, we wanted you to get to know him a bit better, so we asked MatieB a couple of questions:

When was your first experience working on ocean related projects?

Well my work goes back as far as when I stared working in Hyperbaric Medicine years ago, I wanted to be a doctor, but after working in a hospital, considering school and my passions, I decided to pursue photography instead. My first real experience has been with Annie, this past summer and fall when we worked on a promotional DVD for Truth Aquatics.

What makes you come alive?

The ocean makes me come alive! To tell you the truth it's the only place I feel at home. So I feel very passionate about the ocean, and this makes me want to inspire others to share in my feelings.

What is it like working with Annie?

Annie is a great mentor and friend. She is driven and passionate about her work, but most of all she wants to help and inspire others, especially me, to live my dreams! One night after one of my films showed, she caught me telling someone that I was going to be famous in 5 years. We both laughed about that, yet she took it upon herself to really hold me up to a higher level of work. She is truly someone who supports growth!

Tell us about your first experiences with the ocean...

Well I have always been with the ocean. Growing up in Orange County, California, I was first introduced to the ocean well before I could even walk. But I guess my first life changing experience with the ocean was the first time I got to scuba dive...The feeling of breathing underwater, gliding almost effortlessly through the water, I was hooked! The giant kelp forest of the Channel Islands filled with life took my breath away, and from that day forward I knew I was destined to be a diver.
