Tyler Kukla is one cool kid from Naperville, Illinois! He is an Advanced Open Water Diver, has a photo album of over 6,000 photos, plays hockey, and has recently just started up his own environmentally based website…and he’s only a sophomore in high school!
Tell us about your website, Tyler! What’s it about? What do you hope to accomplish with it, and how can others be involved?
My website is www.napesgreenscape.com. It is designed to promote environmental awareness and, furthermore, stewardship worldwide. Locally, it features information and photos (and an upcoming video) relating to some of the ecosystems, such as the prairie and forest, in the Naperville, Illinois area. It also includes information in protecting the coral reefs, as well as a photo gallery of original pictures from some of my past dives. This website is geared towards those who are looking to benefit their community through education and a greater awareness. This could range from kids and teens looking to take some time to complete some environmentally related community service, to adults and politicians who represent and conserve our natural habitats through their lifestyle decisions. With this website, I hope to accomplish the spread of environmental awareness, as well as promoting local community service. There is a section that is soon to be updated (pending reply from the Illinois Prairie Path Organization) which will post the dates and information for group community service projects in the area. Others can become involved in the local community service by visiting the site for the latest updates.

How was your trip to the Channel Islands?
My trip to the Channel Islands was great, unforgettable, and will always stay with me. Every dive was uniquely significant and every dive seemed to be better and better. After my first time living on a boat, every aspect of diving and underwater videography has forever changed.

Conner is one of the coolest kids I know. He joined us for an underwater photo and film expedition off the coast of Southern California. We dived together for four days. Conner had never been on a boat overnight and LOVED the experience of waking up every morning at a dive site. The only trouble he sometimes had was wiggling into his wetsuit as the water temperature was around 68 degrees. We dived with sea lions, black sea bass, garibaldi, kelp forests plus so much more. If you know of any other cool kids we should interview, please contact us at

I just got back in the states, and it was a long journey! Filled with so many great experiences that I will never forget. Overall, it was a great way to see how all of the different countries and continents have such different waste disposal systems. Some good, some bad. Each country also showed me how different everybody lives in this relatively small world. If you go across a border from France to Spain, it feels like you in a different world. After all of that travelling it is definatly nice to be back in the states, but also I now realize how appreciative we should be. It's been great blogging, and i am truly thankful to have the opportunity to do so.

Nicolas Lum is one cool kid. His main sport now is water polo, but he is also a red belt in karate and a great swimmer. Southern California freedive spearfishermen recognize Nic as the youngest person to ever spear a white seabass. Last summer Nic participated in the Jr. Guard program and discovered he had a great talent for the run-swim-run race. He dominated each competition and ended up taking second at the National competition. Nic also enjoys surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, hunting for wild mushrooms, and cooking.
