Filming Video Tip #1
Monday, 27 October 2008

You need to ensure you get the three main shots in visual storytelling: the wide shot, medium shot and the close up. As long as you have these three shots covered you can edit a sequence together. Our camera had some great features and we could do time lapse sequences. To get good time lapse sequences, you can either put your camera on a tripod for or find a picnic table or something steady so your camera will not move during the time lapse. How would you capture the moment?

40 people were attending our reunion during four days, and we knew we wanted to capture a bit of everyone, but we did not want the video to be 40 hours long so we kept notes of who we filmed and who we needed to film. Notice that the shots that really work have action in them. Photographs are great, people pose, but everything is still. The beauty of video is all about capturing the action. You also need action when you go to edit your video together, because you want to edit your sequences together based on action.

Family videos can be boring if you do not add humor and try to capture the personalities. The memories you capture with an edited piece of video is priceless. As these children grow up, they are going to remember one another so much more because we created a movie about their experience.

VIDEO CHALLENGE: Where is the sun? Even on over cast days, the sun’s position will affect your image quality. You always want to try and shoot with the sun at your back!
