So what is the story here? Well first thing we need to know is where; a setting. What we need is called an establishing shot. This editing convention has been around for over 100 years and it can tell us ALOT in a matter of seconds. In our interview with Jon our establishing shot is actually a sequence of clips but all taken in the same place. Shots of the indoor swimming pool, scuba gear, Jon and the kids not only present us with a place but introduce our characters in that place. So who are these people and why do these kids have underwater cameras and I don't? Well, Jon introduces himself and tells us the story verbally. He explains how he ended up working for a company that manufactures underwater housings for cameras. Ah ha....It all makes sense now and all our questions have been answered....but that's not where the story ends, at least not for us filmmakers. We have a method to our madness. The story we want to tell is not actually about Jon, it's about the underwater cameras and how important they have been for him and his kids. Every shot supports this. When Jon talks about his connection to the cameras, we fill the screen with B-roll of him prepping equipment, it gives us a visual that ties into his work. When he talks about how the cameras have made the kids so close with the water, we show it. There's a really good shot in there of them uploading the photos on the computer, some of which are on this site. This is all really great footage that adds up to a very happy time for everyone. The story wraps up with Jon encouraging parents to get their kids in the pool and/or ocean (especially if they have underwater cameras). The underwater B-roll and the photos from their photoshoot close the piece very nicely. This is a very simple story and runs less than 2 minutes yet it encourages, entertains and manages to make Jon the coolest dad on the block! All with a bit of narration and B-roll. Dive Into Your Imagination can't wait to see what these kids start producing. Oh and if you know of any cool ocean related stories we might be interested in telling, hook us up! See you next week.
