Uploading video to an online video sharing site has become very easy. Many of the major video sharing sites now supports high-resolution videos so you can upload your HD videos very easily to the web. The bigger sites like Youtube and Vimeo usually have a maximum file size of 100 megabytes without having to pay for the serves. This mean that you have two main options as far as exporting and compressing your video goes. The best quality for the web would be full resolution H.264. The problem with this though, is that it creates larger files and if your video is in some form of High Definition and more than a minute or two long it will exceed the 100 megabytes limit. Your next best option and a more likely solution is to export your video as a .Mpeg4. This still gives you good quality and is much smaller.

You do loose and little in the quality and in the audio but its worth it with bigger videos, not to mention that most peoples computers and internet connection cant even handle full resolution H.264 on the web, so .Mpeg4 is the way to go for larger videos. If you’re exporting a standard definition video you will want to export at a resolution of 480x720. If your exporting in HD, mostly you will want to export at a resolution of 720x1080 although depending on the resolution your camera shoots you may be able to export at a higher resolution than that. And lastly if your working with a very basic editing program and all this is over your head, you can always just export your video as a .mov (quicktime) or a .wmv (windows) from your basic export settings probably located under the “File” tab in the top right hand corner of the screen. Just make sure to ether export at 100% of source or if you can type in the resolution do that.

Signing up for any online sharing site is very easy as well. Simple go to the site whether it be www.YouTube.com or www.Vimeo.com or any other and click the sign up button. It usually asks for a name and email. Once completed they will send you a confirmation email which will have a link in it which you click on to confirm you are who you say you are and your ready to start uploading! Click the upload button on the main page of the website to start the upload process. You will need to name your video and put a short description about your video. Also you will want to put “tags” in your video.

Tags are words that help others find your video once it’s uploaded. Be careful though… too many tags is a bad thing. So an example would be if your video is about your latest dive to Indonesia some good tags would be: scuba, diving, trip, Indonesia. The upload window might also ask you to select a category, which your video fits into such as Entertainment, Education, or Travel. Once you’ve completed this your ready to click the upload now button. This will bring up a browser window, which you can use to find the video you wish to upload. Once selected the upload should start automatically, and that’s it! Now you can share your videos with the world.
