Labels are not just for Cans.

Organizing your browser is a crucial step in maintaining an organized editing station. After you have successfully imported clips, you will have a a bin full of files with names such as 00024G or clip #6 or maybe you gave them a better name during import, but regardless, there is a better way to organize. We already have a great tutorial on binning in our Camera Coach section, which you should also look at HERE. In addition to these tips I introduce the color labels!

If you are a Mac user, then you know what I'm talking about. Although everyone uses color labels their own way with the Mac interface, like Green files are current, or red files can be deleted, ect....Final Cut has a color label system with their own meanings.

To mark your clip with a color, right click or control+click it. At the very bottom you will see LABEL > open that up to reveal the 6 different clip labels. Of course all clips are labeled NONE by default. The rest are Good Take, Best Take, Alternate Shots, Interviews, and B roll and colored accordingly. This can be very helpful because its an extra tool in organizing the madness of your movie.

But what if you don't like a label like "Alternate shots"? Maybe you'd rather see it say, "$1,000,000 shots!" instead...well this is Final Cut....go up to FINAL CUT PRO>USER PREFERENCES. Then click the labels tab. There you go. It would be really cool if you could add more labels and more colors, but you should probably not get too hung up on that and just get back to editing.
